NASA's
newer S.C.A.P.E. suits
These new S.C.A.P.E. suits have been updated with
improved face visors that curve out like a bubble (more room for
the wearer's face). Instead of the older SCAPE suit's stiff rubber
cuff seal, the newer SCAPE suit uses a twist-lock glove ring (and
boot ring) system with stainless steel hose clamps. (Gloves are
made by North Safety.) The S.C.A.P.E. suits also have restraints
to hold down the expanded back when the backpack is not worn inside
(airfed mode). In airfed mode, technicians use portable
air tanks during transport. The technicians connect their
suits to an air line at the spacecraft assembly building. The
liquid air SCBA system is used when it is not possible or not
safe to use supplied air.
